Every second year during the Danish Autumn Holidays in October, the SUZUKI PIANO WORKSHOP manages to gather some 50 pianoplaying children and youngsters together with their parents in the idyllic South Funen surroundings at the Ollerup Efterskole. (Efterskole is a boarding school for young pupils to do their 9th or 10th class of school before continuing to the Danish Gymnasium = High School level). Initiator is The Danish Suzuki Institute. Apart from solo lessons in piano, a number of mutual lessons are offered, a.o. teambased composition, where, over a period of 4 days, pupils (solo or in small groups), Â manage to create and learn one little personal piece of music.
Children and youth with Suzuki background possess an extremely well developed ability to use their ears, and through their playing activities, they have a thorough knowledge of musical rhetorics on an immediate plan; in spite of the strong discipline in their playing activities, these children and young persons possess the same couriosity and need for a non-reproductive expression, as others of the same age do. However, contrary to most others, these pupils possess technical abilities to reach considerably further, both in the formation of their musical basic material, as well as in the performance of their pieces.
These workshops are supported by the Statens Kunstfonds Musikudvalget, the Berlingske Foundation, the Beckett Foundation, the Augustinus Foundation, the Jacob Gades Legat as well as Erda and Christian Schrøders Foundation.
