La Folia Follemente is virtuoso music. When, during the Baroque era, a musician addressed himself to a teacher, he might have to play a piece rehearsed in advance, but it was also important to be able to improvise over one of one’s contemporaries’ “standards.” To this category belonged the folia, with a repeting chord pattern in a quiet triple time, which, if you were lucky, would make musicians roll their eyes and fall in a trance.
La Folia Follemente does not have such an ostinato, but practises the other qualities of the folia, for three instruments.
